*All animals: must be at least 4 months old, healthy, not for sale/livestock, not pregnant. Route/destination restrictions apply for many pets, especially in UK, AU, HK.


General Policies & Restrictions

  • PETS IN CABIN: Only certified service dogs allowed; pets otherwise not accepted in the international cabin.
  • PETS IN CHECKED BAGGAGE: Dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, and some small birds allowed in AVIH (pressurized hold), one per cage; max 45kg pet+crate; container must be IATA compliant (max 292cm L+W+H). Some breeds/species not accepted.
  • PETS AS CARGO: Required for certain routes/destinations and for larger pets; see route-specific info.
  • BREED RESTRICTIONS: No brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dog/cat breeds permitted May–October (subject to change for heat/safety); certain species not accepted at all.
  • DOCUMENTATION: Export/import permits, health certificate, rabies cert (if applicable), pre-authorization for Japan entry at least 40 days prior (AQS), and ANA consent form.

Pet-Specific Travel Tips

  • Dogs: Only service dogs allowed in cabin with prior approval. Checked baggage for healthy, non-restricted breeds ≥4 months. Be aware of heat embargoes and route/country-specific bans.
  • Cats: No cabin travel; hold/cargo only, not for snub-nosed breeds in May–Oct, must be healthy. Health and import docs mandatory.
  • Birds: Small birds (not birds of prey) accepted as checked baggage/cargo. Max 2 per cage, health docs required.
  • Ferrets/Hamsters: Accepted in checked baggage/cargo. Review country regulations and IATA requirements closely.
  • Rabbits: Allowed as checked baggage/cargo. No sick, pregnant, or very young animals.
  • Reptile/Fish: Not accepted on international ANA passenger flights. Use specialized cargo services if needed.

Container, Weight & Sizing Rules

  • IATA-compliant hard crate required; max 292 cm (L+W+H); max 45kg combined pet+crate. Max 1 animal/cage (2 for birds).
  • Must be ventilated, leak-proof, escape-proof; all wheels removed before check-in.
  • Cooling packs, water nozzles required summer months; feeding not possible in transit.
  • No crates inside another crate, and covered crates banned May–Oct due to heat.

Woofly Tips

  • Book early—ANA only accepts 3 animals per flight.
  • Arrive 2 hours before departure for check-in; bring all completed forms and health documents.
  • Trim thick undercoat in summer (especially for indoor pets). Remove leash and most toys from cage.
  • If entering Japan, notify Animal Quarantine Service 40+ days prior and obtain “Approval of Import Inspection”.
  • Pets must eat before check-in; bring only water nozzles in crate, not traditional bowls.
